Mother always knows best…
I have an amazing mother whose philosophy on life continues to have a tremendous impact on me. My mother was born a very sickly child and was not expected to survive infancy, but she did and continues to thrive. Her outlook on life is shaped by her faith and strong belief that she survived for a purpose. This Mother’s Day, I remember with gratitude some of the lessons my mother taught me and how they are helping me today.
1. Believe The Impossible
My mother has an uncanny ability to believe the impossible. I have shared my greatest dreams and my biggest fears with her and she has always believed in positive outcomes. If you can dream it, you can have it and she will stand with you until it happens.
2. Set Your Own Trends
I grew up in Lagos Nigeria, a status oriented and competitive social environment. My mother never caved in to the pressure of keeping up with the Joneses. She was perfectly proud of wearing what she liked without worrying about what others thought and she always looked amazing! Mum’s style had a tremendous influence on me and my siblings. We love beautiful things but we are not slaves to fashion and trends.
3. Gratitude Is The Right Attitude
Mom taught me to be appreciative and to take nothing for granted. She always made a point of reminding me and my siblings that we were fortunate and that she and my dad worked hard for everything they gave us.
4. Be Adventurous
My mom always took us on really crazy trips when we were kids. I remember a train ride from Lagos to Kano in Northern Nigeria when we exited the train through the windows. Did I mention we were on board with farm animals? Yes that is a trip I’ll never forget, and Mom is still game for anything, especially a great road trip!
5. Have Fun and Indulge
The best things in life don’t have to be expensive! Mom and I love chocolate almond clusters and we love visiting our favorite chocolatier to indulge in this decadent treat. There’s nothing wrong with indulging especially with the woman you love the most.
Wishing you and your Mom a very happy Mother’s Day!
